Actually if you take a look at the standards that Miles was recording throughout the 50's and early 60's, you'll find that they too are "pop songs" just of that era, like "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "Stablemates". Sonny Rollins did the same with "Moritat" (Mack the Kife) and "I've Told Every Little Star." Coltrane did "My Favorite Things". All pop songs.

I'm not sure what lemeilleurgars is on about here. Miles died in 1991. He did have a heroin problem in the early 50s, a major cause of the scarcity of quality work in the years after "Birth of the Cool", but had overcome it by the time he set up the great band with Coltrane, Red Garland, Philly Joe etc and the wonderful collaberation with Gil Evans.
